Jim Suhler Panther Burn Album Review 06-26-2022

Here we go! Here we go! It’s blues album of the week time again. This week we bring for your perusal Jim Suhler, “Panther Burn”, released in February 2014. While not a blues album in the strictest sense of the phrase, Panther Burn, is an album with blues, country, rock, and gospel influences, which makes a durn good quality listen. Jim has been one of our local Dallas area guitar heroes for years, I have several of his albums that get listened to on a regular basis and he doesn’t disappoint. The album kicks off with the title track “Panther Burn” and concludes with the blues-rock blazer “Worldwide HooDoo”. Highlights include the delta flavorings of “Across The Brazos”, the wonderful slide work on “Texassippi”, another burner with “Between Midnight and Day”, and probably my personal favorite “Sky is Full of Crows”. Great vocals, exquisite song writing, with of course great tone. Now part of that great tone I believe comes from a seriously 1000 year old Fender Super Reverb, that looks every part of its thousand years. (this was the amp I believe he was using when I saw him at Six Springs Tavern, back when live shows were just restarting due to the pandemic waning) Correct me if I am wrong Jim. In the meantime, everyone go find this collection of tunes, ye shant be disappointed.
