Tom Principato Blues Over The Years Album Review

Well hello again! It has been a very long time! Sorry for absence but as they say “life happens”. But have no fear as I am back to present to you with April 2023’s Blues Album of the Month!! Can’t you hear the trumpets? (of course you can) Well? Who is it going to be Dave? Just hold your horses I am getting to that exact point. I found this gentleman whilst on a treasure hunt thru Amazon Music, always a good time. Therefore, and without further ado, I give you “Tom Principato, Blues over the Years”, released in January of 1996. Fourteen songs coming in at an hour and 4 minutes.

Tom mixes his tunes with good boogie, check out “Call the Law” or “Try to Reach You”, classic slow blues with “Blue Mood”, some nice funky stuff, with “Never Make Your Move too Soon”. Lots of good stuff here that you will dig. Mr Principato has a glorious tone which includes a touch of crunch and a nice “pop” when he cleans it up. Tom is definitely not afraid to let a Fender sound like a Fender. He is sporting a Strat on the album cover, but I swear I am picking up a Telecaster on some of the tunes. I am not sure of the amplification but his tone smells of Super Reverb or a Princeton. Now having said that, he is probably running an old Lab Series over a Marshall cabinet. It doesn’t matter, of course, as he sounds great.

Blues over the Years is just one of many albums Tom has to his credit, I randomly picked this one and after listening over the past couple of months, I decided that you should hear it too. I am working thru his “Robert Johnson Told Me So” album currently so look for that in the future. Give Tom Principato a listen, I dig it, I believe you will as well.
