Whilest pondering/brooding over who would be featured on this week’s Blues Album o’ the Week, I was pleasantly surprised by a comment I received from a friend of mine, one Shawn Messick. Shawn asked the question, am I familiar with The Marcus King Band, after answering in the affirmative, I found it had been over a year since I reviewed Marcus’ Carolina Confessions album. I decided, well, it’s time to give Marcus another shout-out. We present the self-titled second album simply called “The Marcus King Band”. Released in 2016. If you dug his Carolina Confessions album you will dig this one as well. Great blend of blues, jazz, funk and good ole rock-n-roll. We kick things off with the big upbeat strains of “Ain’t Nothing Wrong with That” and we conclude with a short open jam “The Mystery of Mr Eads”. In-between you will find several gems, the tone soaked “Jealous Man”, the Stevie Wonder flavored “Plant Your Corn Early”, other highlights include “Self-Hatred” feat. Derek Trucks, “Virginia” feat. Warren Haynes and my personal favorite “Thespian Espionage”. After listening you’re going to want to check that release date again, yes it was 2016, and not 1971. There is hope for music these days after-all. Check out this Marcus King offering, it’s as we say, good stuff!
