Alright then, It’s once again time for Dave’s Blues Album of the week, this week we dig deep, deep into the glorious well of Blues past. I bring for your listening ears, “The Virtuoso Guitar of Scrapper Blackwell” released in 1970, these are recordings from 1925-1934. Yes the audio is absolutely terrible, all the hisses, cracks and pops are included free of charge. Get past the audio and delve deep into Mr Blackwell’s work. The man flat out has chops, great rhythm and an impressive vocal style. This recording opens with the rollicking “Kokomo Blues” , a lot of quite impressive single line work. The album ends with the boogie woogie stylings of “Barrelhouse Woman No 2”, and yes he is saying “Barrelhouse” and not what it sounds like. Tee Hee. Other highlights include “Whiskey Man Blues”, “Trouble Blues Pt 1 and Pt 2”, “Down South Blues”, gotta include “Good Woman Blues” which includes some interesting lines that we just couldn’t sing nowadays. Check out Scrapper Blackwell, it’s a fun listen and a history lesson all in one.
